What happens beneath our feet in a garden? How do plants grow? Why are insects important? During National Science Week, Pingrup Primary School students will become scientists, engineers and environmental investigators as they explore the science of gardens, sustainability and life in our rural community.
Throughout the week, students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in exciting hands-on science activities and investigations connected to our school garden and the environment around us. Students will rotate through interactive STEM stations where they will test soil, investigate worms and insects, measure plant growth, build simple irrigation systems, explore composting and learn how weather, water and soil affect living things.
Students will work together to ask questions, make predictions, conduct fair tests and record their findings using tables, graphs, labelled diagrams and photographs. Older students will support younger students during activities, encouraging teamwork and leadership across our multi-age classrooms.
A major part of the project will involve rejuvenating our school gardens to create an outdoor science learning space. Students will prepare garden beds, improve soil, plant vegetables and native plants and continue monitoring the garden throughout the year.
The week will conclude with a community Science Showcase where families and community members will be invited to view student investigations, displays and experiments. This event will celebrate student learning while helping students see how science connects to agriculture, sustainability and everyday life in the Pingrup community.
