Bird Life Portland – A student bird monitoring and citizen science project | SARAH

  • - (AEST)
  • Portland Primary School
    Portland, Portland, VIC 3305, Australia

Grab your binoculars, we're becoming ornithologists!

During National Science Week, PPS students will explore some of Portland's beautiful local habitats: Nun's Beach, Fawthrop Lagoon, and the Portland Community Gardens, to discover the amazing birds that live right on our doorstep.

Students will take part in real scientific fieldwork by observing and identifying bird species, recording data in field journals, and asking questions such as: Which birds are most common in Portland? How does bird life change between different habitats? What features make an area attractive to birds?

Using binoculars, field guides, and nature journals, students will develop skills in observation, scientific inquiry, and data collection. They will contribute their findings to global citizen science platforms such as iNaturalist and The Great Aussie Bird Count, meaning their observations can help scientists and nature lovers learn more about local biodiversity.

The project will also feature support from local bird experts, who will share their knowledge of Portland's birdlife and introduce students to real-world scientific fieldwork, as well as KELP MAGZINE, who will run a workshop for students.

Students will analyse their findings and share their discoveries through graphs, maps, scientific reports, and a student-led "Bird Life Portland" display for families and the wider community.
