Australia’s science film festival.

SCINEMA is an international science film festival that screens every August as part of National Science Week.
The screening program – free to participate in – is curated from films entered in the international film competition. SCINEMA provides a platform on which filmmakers -professional, amateur and student - can showcase their science films, from dramas to documentaries.
Entries for the 2026 festival are currently open. Check out how you can submit your own film HERE.
You can sign up to host a FREE SCINEMA screening in your school, workplace, library or home. We curate thematic programs that you can screen to your audience however you like. For example, our 2025 program included a lineup called ‘space’ which included a 4-minute animation aimed at primary schools, and two 50-minute documentaries for senior schools/adult audiences. Some of high school and university venues played all 3 films, while primary school venues just played the short film.
After registering, you’ll receive an email sharing our password-protected website link – you’ll need your own screen, laptop, or theatre to play them in. You might also like to curate your own activities to add to the screening- perhaps an introduction from a local scientist or science teacher, or a discussion about one of the films. Note- the website will only go live in the days leading up to National Science Week in August.
If you’d like to host a SCINEMA screening that members of the public can join (e.g. at a local library) please register for a public SCINEMA screening.
If you’d prefer to host a SCINEMA screening that’s by invitation-only e.g. for a school or Scout group, please register for a private SCINEMA screening.
