Seeds of Science – The secret life of plants

Ever wondered how a tiny seed, no bigger than a speck of dust, can grow into a giant gum tree? Or how plants manage to keep the very ground we walk on from washing away during a storm?

Join the University of New England Discovery Voyager team and real-life botanists for a hands-on adventure into the incredible world of plants! This isn't your average gardening talk—we are diving deep into the biology that makes life on Earth possible.

What’s happening at the stall?

  • Become a Seed Detective: Get up close with a huge variety of Australian seeds. From tiny hikers that hitch a ride on fur to "parachutists" that fly through the air, you’ll discover the clever ways plants move across the landscape.
  • The Great Soil Save: See soil erosion in action! Use our interactive models to find out how plant roots act like "nature’s glue," holding the earth together and protecting our waterways.
  • Meet the Experts: Chat with botanists from the University of New England. This is your chance to ask your biggest, weirdest questions about how plants eat, breathe, and survive in the wild.

At our stall, we believe in inquiry and play. There are no tests and no wrong answers—just fascinating data waiting to be discovered. Whether you love biology or just like getting your hands a little dirty, come and see why plants are the ultimate "First Scientists" of our planet.
